Top Five Haunted Lighthouses
June 11th, 2007 | by Sue |So, which are the top five haunted lighthouses in North America? It’s hard to choose, since there are so many that qualify. However, here are my choices, using the following criteria for selection:
- Reputation/reliability of those reporting sightings
- Quality of the sightings; i.e. is it just a feeling or smell, or actual sights
- Investigation by noted paranormal research teams
So with those in mind, here are my selections for the five most haunted lighthouses in North America.
- Point Lookout Lighthouse, Maryland
- Unquestionably, this is number one. Park rangers, usually fairly reliable, have reported sightings. The station was investigated by the Maryland Committee for Psychic Research
- Old Presque Isle Lighthouse, Michigan
- Sightings reported by members of the sheriff’s department and the Air National Guard. Investigated by the Coast Guard to verify the lights had not been turned back on.
- New Ledge Lighthouse, Connecticut
- Home of “Ernie,” a poltergeistic energy also identified as John Randolph. Coast Guardsmen have felt the effects of him, although only women and children have seen him.
- St. Augustine Lighthouse, Florida
- Heavily investigated by several teams, this lighthouse was described as the “Mona Lisa of hauntings.”
- Heceta Head Lighthouse, Oregon
- Continuing even today, Rue has been seen and heard by many.
So, those are my choices. Do you agree or disagree? Please leave comments with your opinion.

I spent the night at New London Ledge Light with the New England Ghost Project last year; the investigation was featured on the “American Builder” show on Comcast’s CN8 channel. The most interesting part of the night was when Maureen Wood of the NEGP seemed to channel the spirit of an angry male spirit. This led to alternate explanation of the lighthouse’s resident ghost. The spirit that “spoke” through Maureen claimed to be a worker who was locked out on the roof by others on a work crew as a prank, and he fell to his death. This is actually more plausible than the usual tale of a keeper committing suicide, which is not backed up by any evidence. Other than that, nothing really out of the ordinary happened during the investigation, but it is kind of a creepy place in the middle of the night. Lots of spiders, too.

Thanks for the update on “Ernie,” Jeremy. A lot of the so-called suicides are hard to document, but they sure make for good reading, don’t they? The spirit that revealed himself to Ms. Wood, was that perhaps the John Randolph allegedly revealed in the 1981 documentation? It would certainly be interesting if it was; two manifestations of the same angry man.
