Wood Island Lighthouse Tours
June 26th, 2007 | by Sue |Â Want to visit a haunted lighthouse and island? Take the tour to Wood Island this summer, if you’re in Maine. This was the scene of the murder of Sheriff Miliken and the suicide of Howard Hobbs. Last year, with the help and assistance of the New England Ghost Project, the FOWIL held a “Haunting Event” for a very successful fundraiser.
The Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse have announced that boat tours to the island and lighthouse will begin on June 30, 2007 and run through September 1. These tours are offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. and on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. All times are Eastern Daylight Time.
The lighthouse is located off the coast of Biddeford, Maine and tours leave from Vine’s Landing in Biddeford Pool. The guided tour takes about 1 1/2 hours and is subject to weather and sea conditions. Reservations are required. Call the reservation line any Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for tours each week. The reservation line will open on June 26th. Phone number to call (handled by volunteers) is 207.286.3229
There is no fixed charge for the tour, but donations of at least $10 USD are strongly encouraged. This goes to help defray the cost of running the boat, and the ultimate goal of restoring Wood Island Lighthouse.
More information is available at their site, including a web cam for viewing the light from the comfort of your computer chair. But that’s not quite the same as the tour. Part of the money from these tours will be going to replace the handrail in the tower, so that visitors will be allowed to climb to the top. As it is right now, only the museum is accessible.
If you’re in Maine this summer, be sure to make a stop in Biddeford and take the tour.
