Open House at Haunted Lighthouse

August 10th, 2007 | by Sue |

Portsmouth Harbor Light will be open for tours on Saturday, August 11, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, according to the Seacoast Online. Portsmouth Harbor is alleged to be haunted, and from a story on the Portsmouth Herald, an interview with Jeremy D’Entremont, lighthouse historian:

Jennifer (reporter): Does the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse have any ghost stories?

Jeremy D’Entremont: Well, there were a number of reports of sounds and things people saw over a period of time, to the point where last year we had a group called the New England Ghost Project do an investigation and I was here with them until about 2 a.m. It was very interesting, to say the least. A couple of our volunteers have heard what they say is a male voice inside of the tower, one of those people was my wife. She was here alone and swears she heard a male voice blurt something out really fast, you couldn’t tell what it was saying. She was taking Christmas decorations down, she looked around, came outside and there was nobody there. A few months later, another one of our volunteers was here by himself doing some painting on the stairs and described the exact same thing. The Coast Guard has reported shadowy figures moving around the ground at night. The New England Ghost Project, when they were here, they found evidence of possibly several spirits in the lighthouse, around the grounds, and in the keeper’s house.

If you’re in New England this weekend, be sure to attend. For more information, and to purchase tickets to the accompanying concert, visit the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse.
