Point Wilson Lighthouse Transfer On Hold For Now

Point Wilson Lighthouse Coast Guard PhotoWashington’s Parks and Recreation Committee was planning on purchasing the Point Wilson Lighthouse from the Coast Guard, but plans have been tabled until sometime next year, according to a recent story from the Peninsula Daily News.Heavy wind and waves have damaged the property, with last winter’s storms sending waves crashing over the protective rock wall, and flooding the grounds and basement of the keeper’s home. The foghorn was ripped from the site and has been lost. The past week, the Coast Guard began shoring up the rock wall, replacing the missing stones and adding more. The rock wall was originally built when an earlier storm hurled rocks through the lighthouse door.

The first tower was built in 1879, but was lost to the tides and high seas. The current one has been standing since 1914, but both it and the house are only about 100 feet from the water. The tower and the residence are alleged to be haunted. People have seen a shade entering the locked lighthouse as well as felt someone in the light keepers residence.
